Prior to upgrading their container assignment and transporting operations, all of the expected tasks for handling containers were given to the truck drivers and material handlers in paper form. This slow and labor intensive process resulted in truck drivers having to get in a queue at the pier 2 to 3 days in advance, causing serious traffic congestion around the dock.

In an effort to speed up that process and decrease the traffic congestion on the dock, one of the largest ports in China installed Advantech's TREK-723 in-vehicle computer on their container trucks. With its built-in WWAN communications capabilities, the TREK-723 transfers all the necessary data in real-time to the gate computer, including plate number, driver's license and container number. Upon approaching the gate the system immediately confirms the identity of the truck and grants access to the port. The harbor system then forwards all the tasks in real-time to the TREK-723 dispatching the driver to the exact cargo location and confirms the location and container drop-off /pickup via the GPS on the truck.

With the real-time nature of the data and elimination of the manual paper processes, the harbor is able to manage valuable equipment and cargo easily and effectively and save significant administration costs over the previous system.
